The first person goes and places an X into a square

The second person adapts a strategy to block the first person from getting three in a row, while seeing how they can get their three in a row. The person places an O into a square.

The first person places another X.

The second person places another O positioned to block the first person from completing three in a row.

First player places an X.

Since X now has two lines going (one across in the middle, and one diagonal upper left to lower right), second person can only block one.

First player places one more X and wins the game.
